Michael Silverthorne

I was born and raised on the Coast Salish peoples’ traditional territory in Vancouver, BC. I was raised by my parents, who moved to British Columbia from Ontario and are of British, Irish, and Portuguese descent. I welcome individuals from all backgrounds and walks of life into my practice.

I am trained as a generalist to work with individual's, relationship, and families. I have gained valuable experience working with children, youth, families, parents, and couples. Much of my work is informed by a family systems perspective, recognizing how relationships and family dynamics shape our experiences and wellbeing.

My Therapeutic Approach

My approach to therapy is grounded in a family-of-origin focus and a common factors framework. I integrate several evidence-based approaches, including Emotionally Focused Family Therapy (EFFT), Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) skills, Internal Family Systems (IFS), and Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT).

A Family-of-Origin Lens

I believe our earliest relationships play an important role in shaping how we see ourselves and connect with others. In therapy, I work with clients to explore how family dynamics, attachment experiences, and intergenerational patterns may influence present-day challenges. By understanding these roots, it often becomes possible to shift long-standing relational and emotional patterns in meaningful ways.

A Common Factors Foundation

Research consistently shows that one of the most important elements in therapy is the quality of the therapeutic relationship. In my work, I prioritize:

  • A strong, collaborative therapeutic alliance

  • Warmth, empathy, and authenticity

  • A safe and non-judgmental space

  • Clear and shared goals

I believe therapy is most effective when clients feel genuinely understood and actively involved in their own growth.

Integrating Evidence-Based Approaches

I thoughtfully integrate multiple therapeutic approaches to meet each client’s unique needs:

  • Emotionally Focused Family Therapy (EFFT) to strengthen emotional bonds and improve relationship patterns

  • Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) skills to support emotional regulation, distress tolerance, and interpersonal effectiveness

  • Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) techniques to identify and shift unhelpful thinking and behavioural patterns

This blend of insight-oriented exploration and practical skill-building helps support both deeper understanding and lasting change.
